Faro without a car: arrivals, walking and day trips

A Faro stay can combine walking in the city, a road transfer from the airport, boats to the beaches and trains east along the Algarve. Start with the journeys you want to make, then choose the transport for each.

Getting from Faro Airport into the city

The airport is separate from the city railway station. If you land at Faro Airport and want to continue by train, first make the road journey into town. For a stay at the Perch, compare the airport bus with a taxi or an app-booked car, taking luggage and your group size into account.

Airport arrival options
OptionWhat to check
Airport busThe airport lists Próximo routes 14 and 16. Check your date, destination stop and departure with the operator.
TaxiUse the airport taxi service and choose a vehicle with room for your party and bags.
UberFollow the pickup instructions shown in your app after requesting a suitable vehicle.

The airport’s transport page links the bus services. Uber’s Faro Airport instructions explain pickup arrangements. Compare the options for your actual arrival time; prices and waiting times vary.

Arriving by train

Faro’s main railway station is the city arrival point to look for when planning an intercity rail journey. Use Comboios de Portugal (CP) for your route, travel date and tickets, then plan the final journey from the station to the apartment.

Bom João is a different station, east of the main station. It is where we have started regional trips towards Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. Do not assume that an arrival ticket to Faro or every train in the city also serves Bom João: select and check the exact station in your journey plan.

A Faro day on foot

One relaxed sequence is the municipal market, the historic centre and the waterfront. Start with our coffee or lunch suggestions at the market, then head towards Cidade Velha when you feel ready. Arco da Vila, the old-town streets and the marina give the afternoon a different setting.

Our wider interactive Faro map includes the Municipal Museum, the Algarve Regional Museum and Teatro Lethes, as well as useful neighbourhood stops. Pick a cultural stop that interests you and check its current opening or programme. You do not need to fit all of them into one walk.

Before buying the Perch, we spent 17 weeks in Faro across six rentals. The pleasure for us was having time to repeat small routines: the same coffee counter, another wander in the old town, and somewhere familiar to return to. Leave room for that in your plans.

Boats for beaches, trains for towns

Central Faro is beside the lagoon rather than directly on an Atlantic beach. Our beaches and islands guide compares Praia de Faro with Ilha Deserta and links the boat operators. Treat the beach as an outing with an outward and return journey.

For a change of town, head east. Olhão offers markets and a waterfront; Tavira has its river, old bridge and historic streets; Vila Real de Santo António brings a broad square and the Guadiana. Our train day-trip guide helps you choose one and plan around the live CP information.

Staying at the Perch

Peacock Perch is a three-bedroom apartment for up to six guests at Rua Ataíde de Oliveira 2, Faro. The lift reaches the third-floor apartment; the private rooftop is reached by stairs. See the property details when deciding whether the layout suits your group.

A car may be useful for countryside plans, a wider touring itinerary or your own mobility needs. For a stay built around Faro, island days and eastern train trips, start by mapping those specific journeys before deciding to hire one. The apartment has a private garage; confirm vehicle fit before bringing a car.
