Which Faro beach day suits you?
Faro’s city waterfront faces the Ria Formosa lagoon. The Atlantic beaches sit beyond it on the barrier coast, so staying in central Faro means planning a separate beach outing. We enjoy the journey across the water as much as arriving on the sand.
| Place | Getting there | Why choose it? |
|---|---|---|
| Praia de Faro | Passenger ferry from the city, or road access via the bridge near the airport | Beach cafés, restaurants and a settled beach community |
| Ilha Deserta | Boat from Faro; choose a service with Animaris | Sand, dunes, the boardwalk and a meal at Estaminé |
Either can fill a day. Choose one, arrange the return journey, and avoid turning a beach visit into a timetable exercise with too many stops.
Praia de Faro: ferry, beach and lunch
The public passenger ferry leaves from Portas do Mar in Faro and arrives on the lagoon side of Praia de Faro. From there, make your way through to the Atlantic beach. The Faro Beach ferry website has the current timetable, fares and ticket arrangements. Praia de Faro also has road access via the bridge near Faro Airport.
We have enjoyed this beach even in August by walking away from the busiest access points until we found a spot that suited us. The settled stretch gives you places to stop for food; there is no need to make the whole day about staying beside one entrance.
Bel’mare Gastrobar has been a favourite lunch pause. Chris remembers fresh fish and octopus salad, with a wonderful view from the second-floor dining area. Check its current menu and hours for your visit. Locate Bel’mare at Praia de Faro.
Ilha Deserta: dunes, a boardwalk and Estaminé
Ilha Deserta, also called Ilha da Barreta, is our choice when we want to leave the hurry behind. We remember pale sand, Atlantic surf and small discoveries along the walk: shells on the beach and interpretation panels on the boardwalk. Enjoy the shells where they are and use the marked paths through the dunes.
Animaris lists the island’s boat services and tours. Pick the service that suits your date and check the exact boarding point and return arrangement. Different boat options can make different kinds of day; a ticket for one service should not be assumed to cover another.
At Estaminé, we once shared local clams with garlic and coriander, potatoes and a bottle of wine on a January visit. We thought the setting made it a meal worth lingering over. That memory is not a promise of a walk-in table: use the restaurant’s booking information and arrange lunch alongside your boats.
Arrange the return before the outward journey
- Check the current service. Look up your travel date, departure point and final return. Services can change with weather or operating conditions.
- Match lunch to your boats. If a particular restaurant is the reason for the trip, confirm the table and transport together.
- Bring what makes a beach day comfortable. Water, sun protection and a beach blanket are on our list.
- Keep the afternoon flexible. Give yourself time to return to the landing rather than planning to arrive at the last moment.
