Day trips from Faro by train: Olhão, Tavira and beyond

Head east from Faro for waterfront markets in Olhão, riverside wandering in Tavira or the Guadiana at Vila Real de Santo António. Choose one town and give it time.

Choose a town for the day

Our eastbound day-trip shortlist

OlhãoWaterfront restaurants and the market buildingsMarket area, old-town wandering, a meal by the water

Vila Real de Santo AntónioThe planned town centre and Guadiana riverfrontPraça Marquês de Pombal, grid streets, river promenade

These are suggestions for an unhurried outing, not timed tours. One destination is enough for a satisfying day. Save the next town for another trip instead of watching the clock through lunch.

Faro or Bom João: check your departure station

We have started our eastbound regional trips at Bom João, near the Perch. Faro’s main station is a separate stop. Before setting out, enter your exact departure and destination in the CP journey planner and confirm that the service you choose calls at that station.

Check the outward journey and several return options together. If dinner is part of your plan, make sure the evening return works before settling on a table. Current timetables and fares belong with CP; an old screenshot or a past journey is not a reliable plan for a new date.

Olhão: markets and a waterfront meal

We have had five or six dinners in Olhão and often let the waterfront decide the evening. There is seafood, of course, but our pleasure has been wandering past the restaurants and choosing what we feel like eating.

The red-brick market halls are a useful landmark for the day. If seeing the stalls trading is your priority, check the current market hours before travelling. You can combine the market area with the surrounding streets and a waterfront coffee or lunch, leaving time to make your way back to the station.

Visit Portugal’s Olhão overview introduces the town’s fishing heritage, markets and quayside. Our suggestion is to leave plenty of space between those sights for whatever catches your eye.

Tavira: a river, a bridge and time to wander

Our Tavira outing had no planned agenda. We crossed the old bridge, stopped for a beer in the sunshine beside the river, then wandered up a short hill to a restaurant in a shady square. That easy sequence is the feeling we would try to keep.

The Gilão river gives you a natural starting point. Explore the riverfront and the old bridge, then consider the historic streets and castle hill if the climb suits you. Tavira’s old bridge is often called the Roman Bridge; the structure seen today is associated with a later rebuilding, so the name is not a simple statement of its age.

Visit Portugal’s Tavira walk offers more background. Pick the parts that interest you, with a café or lunch stop between them, and keep your return train in mind.

Vila Real de Santo António: beside the Guadiana

Farther east, Vila Real de Santo António has a different feel. Start at Praça Marquês de Pombal, explore the town’s grid of streets and continue to the riverfront, with Spain across the Guadiana.

The square is a useful meeting point and an easy place to orient yourself before wandering. This outing can simply be about the town and the river; it does not depend on fitting in a crossing to Spain. Visit Portugal’s town guide explains the planned centre and its history.

Leave room for the way home

Check for service updates before travelling, keep the return options handy, and leave enough time to reach the correct station. If you are still choosing where to base the rest of the holiday, our Faro without a car guide connects airport arrivals, city days and island trips.

Back in Faro, choose one of our favourite restaurants or keep the evening for the terrace at the Perch. A day out need not be followed by another full itinerary.
